| Cone Shell and Conotoxins HomePage |
INFO : For many years marine cone shells of the genus Conus were collected for their very pretty shells. Only recently has it become apparent the mollusc within the shell produces a venom that contains toxins (conotoxins) some of which are useful in the treatment of chronic morphine-resistant pain and stroke. Some cone shells are toxic to humans (there are approx. 30 deaths recorded). The conotoxins are proving to be valuable tools for pharmacology as well as agents with application for pain-relief.
